Plan your first video with your phone

By Rushikesh Murlidhar Walke

Your first video can start with one clear topic, a little preparation, and sound your audience can hear. Use a short practice recording to learn what needs improving.

Choose one question

“Explain the whole subject” is a large task. Choose a question that lets you demonstrate one useful thing, such as “How do I find a downloaded file on my phone?”

Write a four-part outline

  1. Say which problem you will help the viewer solve.
  2. Show the steps in the order they should be followed.
  3. Explain one point where someone might get stuck.
  4. Show the result at the end.

Check your recording setup

Check your battery, lighting, background noise, and notifications. If you are recording your screen, close anything that might reveal phone numbers, account details, or another person’s information.

Make a short test

Record ten to twenty seconds, then watch and listen to it. Move to a quieter place if your voice is hard to hear. Adjust the camera or screen size if the important details are difficult to see.

Before publishing: check that you have permission to use any music, images, or clips you include. Your own words and recordings are a straightforward place to start.
